All Inclusive vs. Authentic Bahamian Experiences

Tuesday, 21 December, 2010

In this current economy it seems like many people are more curious about “All-Inclusive” options for their next vacation.  This may be a for a few reasons.  One, people feel like they will save money, and two, it is convenient to be able to budget with all-inclusive vacations.  While all-inclusive options may be the best route for some people, we feel like that route can be extremely limiting and often times it does not allow guests to fully experience the culture which they are surrounded by.

The Bahamas are rich with cultural history, and our experience has been that all-inclusive resorts cut visitors off from that abounding Bahamian way of life.  When you as a guest have paid for all of your food upfront in the Bahamas, you will be much less likely to walk over the bridge to indulge in delicious local conch salad, take a taxi to the “Fish Fry” to really experience how Bahamians eat and play, or have an amazing time visiting one of the hundreds of  incredible genuinely Bahamian bars on the island.

That being said, here are some ways that our guests have effectively budgeted their trip without limiting themselves to all-inclusive resorts:

1.  Bringing a Cooler and Packing Food.

  • All of our units are equipped with full kitchens, and bringing food can help cut down costs.  Snacks by the pool and home cooked meals in are common at Sunrise Beach Villas.
  • Also, there are several grocery stores on the island.  The food prices may be a bit higher than you are used to back home, so anything that can be brought and not spoil in transport is a good idea to bring yourself.  Ask your cab driver to stop at the grocery store on the way to us to grab anything you could not bring yourself.
  • Local fish markets are a walk from us at Sunrise Beach Villas, and grilling out on your patio is a fantastic way to experience the Bahamas.

2.  Planning Adventures With Our Front Desk

  • Our front desk is a wealth of knowledge for things to do in the Bahamas.  We have many partnering excursion companies that we work with on the island, and using our rates can help save money.
  • There are so many amazing things to do in the Bahamas: Snorkeling, Dolphin Encounters, Deep Sea Fishing, Mopeds, Catamaran Day Trips, and the list goes on…

3.  Taking Advantage of Viola’s Drink Specials

  • Viola’s Bar and Grill on our property has a drink special for every day of the week!  Viola’s is a very popular spot on the island in part due to our low drink prices.  For those Bahamas guests that choose to stay at the big resort down the street, many end up coming down to Viola’s for drinks because of the outrageous price that big resort charges for a blue drink with a pineapple slice in it.

We hope this helps you plan out your next vacation, whether that is with us in the Bahamas or somewhere else.  There are ways to save money while vacationing without sacrificing your experience in the local culture!

Best wishes,

The Sunrise Beach Villas Team

VRBO from Home Away’s Visit!

Monday, 16 August, 2010

The great folks at VRBO.Com decided that they wanted to visit us at Sunrise Beach Villas in the Bahamas, and we couldn’t have been more excited to host these guests!!

After their stay with us, they made the decision to write a review of our property and feature on their website www.vrbo.com.

We had so much fun having them with us, and by the looks of their review, they had trouble leaving!  We are very proud of the continued guest enjoyment, and love to hear feedback whenever possible.

From www.vrbo.com:

“Describe your perfect vacation and Sunrise Beach provides it all. Relax on a crystal clear blue beach and let the world go by, or seek out multitudes of fun. Take a swim in one of two pools, visit our onsite restaurant Viola’s Bar and Grill, or enjoy a cool refreshing drink from Archie’s beach front bar as you gaze out over the water…”

Bahamian Independence Day!

Monday, 19 July, 2010

Saturday July 10th was the Bahamian Independence Day from Great Britian!

Independence18

We celebrated in style here at Sunrise Beach Villas, and had a blast with our guests and friends!

Sunrise Beach Villas had local vendors come to our property and showcase their authentic crafts, culinary treasures, and Caribbean music.  It was a blast!  We even had a bouncy castle set up for the kids.

I think if you look close enough in our pictures, you may even catch a Sunrise Beach Villas employee or two in the castle.  :)

Independence44

Thank you to our guests for celebrating our 37th Year of Independence.  We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than with you!

Independence36

Sincerely,

The Sunrise Beach Villas Team

Hands for Hunger

HandforHungerResize

This summer we felt like was a great time to introduce an exciting new special that not only allows you to receive free nights with us, but also supports an incredible local charity here in the Bahamas.  We have decided to support Hands for Hunger in the Bahamas.

We wanted to take some time to tell you a little more about Hands for Hunger here in our blog.

From www.handsforhunger.org

Our Mission
Hands For Hunger is a humanitarian organization committed to the elimination of hunger and the reduction of food waste through the creation of meaningful and engaging partnerships formed amongst all sectors of the Bahamian community. We strive to inspire a shared sense of social and environmental responsibility amongst citizens, who, individually and collectively, come to realize the power of their own contributions. We do this by food rescue and distribution, education and other innovative solutions.
Our Vision
Our vision is a transformed Bahamas where everyone has access to three nutritious and fortifying meals each day. No one goes hungry. The quality of our environment is enhanced.”

Hands for Hunger is an amazing organization that hopes to eliminate people going hungry in the Bahamas.  They teach Bahamians about sustainable food practices and make sure that disadvantaged people on the island are not without 3 nutritious meals per day.  We couldn’t be happier to support such a great cause and partner with an organization that is making a real tangible difference on the island.

For the months of June and July, if you book 3 or more nights with us you can receive up to 2 free nights for a donation to Hands for Hunger.  Each $40 donation to Hands for Hunger gets you one free night at Sunrise Beach Villas, up to 2 free nights.

What is Conch??

Monday, 26 April, 2010

No visit to the Bahamas is complete without a sampling of the local cuisine.  One of the oldest and most traditional Bahamian ingredients is a sea muscle known as “Conch”; pronounced “konk” not “kon-ch”.  Say it like the locals!

The Queen Conch shell above is what the majority of conch used in Bahamian cuisine looks like in the ocean.  If you find yourself snorkeling around the island and run across a shell like this, it is most likely home to a muscle inside.  While it can be surprising to see something moving when flipping over a shell, they are totally harmless and quite private.  They will hide from you inside their shell.
Just a short walk from us under the bridge that connects Nassau to Paradise island, you will find some of the most delicious conch on all of the island.  There are many ways to prepare conch: Conch Fritters, Conch Chowder, Scorched Conch, Seared Conch, and my favorite Conch Salad.

Conch salad is a Bahamian secret to a long youthful life.  Bright citric acidity, fresh vegetables, conch, and a hint of spice make this dish one of the most unforgettable meals ever made.  We suggest not leaving the island without trying some of our famous conch salad!  Make sure to ask whoever makes it for you about the “pistol”.
Enjoy your time in the Bahamas!!
